772 Goes to Washington
Thanks to a generous gift from Steve Friend of Treasure Coast Lexus and Treasure Coast Toyota, members of Boy Scout Troop 772 will be packing their bags and heading to Washington, D.C., later this month to visit with lawmakers, including State Representatives Larry Lee, Congressman Patrick Murphy, St. Lucie County Commissioner Kim Johnson, and Congressman John Lewis. Friend learned of the invitation the troop had received and offered $8,400 to help cover the cost of the trip. The remaining funds were donated through Andrew Hunt and the Roy Hunt Foundation, and the St. Lucie County Firefighters. While in the capitol, members of the troop and their chaperones will meet with Congressman Lewis, visit with Congressman Murphy, who extended the initial invite to the boys, and have a chance to tour the capital and White House. Both children are in the battle of a lifetime against the meanest monster ever – cancer. Just eight years old, Elice loves school and reading almost as much as she loves spending time with her younger brother and sister. Her mom calls Elice, “Our first blessing.” Julian Fraga is the youngest of three siblings, and he loves school and art. Unfortunately, Elice and Julian can’t go to school and enjoy class with their school chums; they’re too busy with chemotherapy, blood work, and trying to stay positive despite the brutal treatments they’re on to help them get better. The Port St. Lucie Police Officer and father of two was just 39 a few months ago when he was diagnosed with a cancerous congenital germ cell tumor in his chest. Currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment in preparation for an upcoming surgery, Officer Chunn, who is normally protecting everyone else’s life, has been unable to work since August. After seven years on the beat for the citizens of Port St. Lucie, it’s time for the community to come to the aid of one of its finest community servants. Triple Play for Taylor
As you know, the Van Duzer Foundation likes to mix things up when we throw a fundraising party. It’s not going to be any different this time around as we pull out all the stops for 14 year-old Taylor Montpetit – a Fort Pierce resident with a serious illness. For most of his young life, Taylor has been battling Primary Immune Deficiency (PID) – an illness which leaves him unable to participate in many activities that would be considered normal for a child of his age, and one that leaves him exceptionally vulnerable to infections and illnesses which can become life-threatening. As of this writing, the family is also awaiting a possible diagnosis of Cystic Fibrosis in addition to the PID.
