Paul Duren Fundraiser
Abundant thanks to everyone who came out to help Paul & Melissa Duren and family last night. What an incredibly caring community, which helped raise $6,640 for this terrific family. Thanks also to Florida’s Blood Centers, and those who made a donation of blood that will help save three lives. We are grateful to everyone, and will let you know soon what’s coming next! As a member of the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office for many years, Paul and Melissa Duren helped make St. Lucie County a safe and friendly place to live and raise a family. Now it’s Paul and Melissa who need our help to do the same for them. Last year, Paul Duren was diagnosed with Stage Four Melanoma, and the prognosis was not very hopeful. Having been laid off from his job at Piper, the family was left without income or insurance since April 2010. Melissa, who has suffered through several painful back surgeries, is unable to work. With three children ranging in age from 12 to 17, you can imagine how difficult it’s been for the Duren family. The Van Duzer Foundation is wondering if you’d like to help us help a local family in need. Wednesday, February 16th, the Van Duzer Foundation will be hosting an evening of celebration and pizza. ONE HUNDRED PERCENT of all sales from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. will benefit the Duren family. That means every slice, every beer, every soda, and even the salaries of everyone working that evening will be donated back to Paul and Melissa Duren and their three children. There will be music, activities for the whole family, bounce houses, raffle items, the Avenue D Boys’ Choir, and a 50/50 drawing to help raise additional funds to help with the many expenses overwhelming this local family in need. Florida’s Blood Centers will also be on hand to collect donations of blood in honor of Paul Duren, who has received several lifesaving pints of blood during his battle with melanoma....

It was a night of heroes big and small! For one night only, Football Hall of Famer and legendary Miami Dolphin Coach Don Shula helped to celebrate volunteerism and community spirit as the Van Duzer Foundation hosted its own “Night of Heroes” Saturday, December 4th at the PGA Learning Center in Port St. Lucie, Florida. The Van Duzer Foundation, which helps individuals and families in St. Lucie County who are struggling and in crisis because of tragic and unforeseen events. Since its inception in 2008, the Van Duzer Foundation has raised and donated over $235,000 to families in crisis, raised over 35,000 pounds of food, and helped Florida’s Blood Centers collect more than 3,000 pints of lifesaving blood. Known for its unique events, the Foundation has also broken two world records, closed down entire streets in an attempt to create a line of pizza that circled a city block, and helped to inspire hundreds of volunteers to share their time, talent, and treasure with the community. To honor the exceptional volunteers who have donated their time, the Foundation hosted a dinner at PGA Learning Center, where ten local businesses were recognized for their extraordinary efforts to promote blood donations in November 3rd’s Van Duzer Foundation BE A HERO DAY, an event which collected 1,087 pints of blood in a single day’s time and motivated 20 other counties around Florida to attempt to do the same. Twenty eight local businesses participated in this year’s Blood Bowl event. Legendary Coach Don Shula presented Executive Director Norm Penner and Program Director Brenda Stokes from the Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County with the coveted Blood Bowl Cup, which will be displayed prominently until next year’s BE A HERO DAY. Sponsored by PNC Bank, Lawnwood Regional Medical Center and Heart Institute, St. Lucie Medical Center, and Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers, the dinner and awards ceremony also featured a reunion of many of the 26 families and individuals assisted by the Van Duzer Foundation during the past two years, as well as the recognition of the Foundation’s amazing volunteers. To learn more about the Van Duzer Foundation’s mission and work, please call Scott Van Duzer at (772) 528-3467....

One hundred percent of the proceeds go to Autumn. Autumn Larkin is an incredible woman who usually cares for others. Now she’s battling cancer and it’s a perfect time for us to show her the same tender loving care she’s shown to the community in her role as a nurse. From 3 p.m. until 10 p.m. ONE HUNDRED PERCENT OF ALL SALES at Big Apple Pizza and Pasta in Fort Pierce will be donated to Autumn Larkin. In addition to being able to donate just by enjoying a slice of pizza and the best garlic knots around, the Van Duzer Foundation, along with its partner, PNC Bank, will be holding a fashion show featuring items from area merchants who have a whole lot of style. Come out for dinner, to enjoy a free fashion show, but most of all, come out to support a nurse, community member, and an amazing woman in the fight of a lifetime. And please bring a friend, share this invitation with everyone on your email and Facebook lists, and come hungry. After all – we all look “pretty in pink”....
